Trolls: World Tour (stylized as Trolls: THE WORLD TOUR) is a 2016 American 3D computer-animated musical fantasy comedy film directed by Mike Mitchell and Valarie Kaur, and produced by Trolls's creators (Mark Mothersbaugh and Christopher Lackner) and co-directed by Brent Oakes, Bridget Carpenter, and Josh Bard. The film stars Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, Zooey Deschanel, Gwen Stefani, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, James Corden, Elizabeth Banks, Christopher Plummer, Christopher Walken, and Sophia Bush, and features music by Rivers Cuomo and Fatboy Slim. Set in a fictional, prehistoric Troll Village, the film tells the story of the antics of Branch (Timberlake), a triceratops obsessed with the Internet, and the love story of Poppy (Deschanel), Branch's cousin and fellow troll. Production began in 2013 and ended in 2015. The film was released on November 4, 2016. Despite generally negative reviews, it was a box office success, grossing over $346.7 million worldwide. "Trolls" received nominations for an Academy Award, two Critics' Choice Movie Awards, a Golden Globe, and a BAFTA Award, among others. A sequel, "Trolls 2", was released on November 10, 2019. Six years later, the lazy and disobedient baby Troll Branch is found by Branch's mother in a trash dump. The mother immediately takes Branch home to the Troll Village and explains that Branch was found with a severely damaged horn, as a result of being run over by a car. Poppy, the hero troll princess, is busy saving her troll brothers and sisters from a horde of maturing "Old Trolls" when Branch arrives home. The Old Trolls are vicious creatures who rule the Troll Village, usually forcing its inhabitants to do dangerous labor. Poppy is initially frustrated with Branch's quietness and attempts to persuade him to do something, but ultimately comes to care for him after learning of the hardships he had faced. After a long negotiation with Branch, Poppy agrees to repair the damaged horn, but all while Branch has been repeating the phrase "I want Poppy" over and over again in a stupor. Poppy decides to help him, and the two hatch a plan to enter a nearby human-owned mine, located at the foot of the mountains, to collect gold. Branch uses the gemstones in his magic horn to conjure the image of a friendly yet overprotective golden eagle, who shares with him some of his human understanding of the world, allowing him to communicate with the human world. After hours of digging, the two encounter the Old Trolls, who are about to eat Poppy and Branch. Branch and Poppy prepare to fight, but an amazing magical thing occurs: all of the Old Trolls are transformed into ordinary beings. Branch rescues Poppy and they both return to the hut. They are able to obtain gold, but Poppy also receives a wound that nearly takes her life. Poppy decides to allow Branch to drink her blood to heal her, but she can't do so until her wish for him to communicate to her is fulfilled. Realizing that he needs to fight harder to win her affections, Branch realizes that he is part dragon, and the blood of a dragon heals his human wounds. He also realizes that it was not Poppy's wish that had brought them together; rather, it was her wish that she could truly commune with him in a way no other human can. So, Branch sings a song in which he tells her the secret of her connection to the other world. Once she hears the song, Poppy gives him her blood, allowing them to make love. However, not everything has gone well for Branch. On a later trip to the underground forest, Poppy, who now has to drink dragon blood in order to survive, is attacked by a dragon, and she is mortally wounded. She dies in Branch's arms. He refuses to return to the surface, and the little dragon who tells him that she only has a few hours to live convinces him to let her die. Branch buries Poppy, his pain increasing when he realizes that the little dragon was right. But Branch cannot turn back, as if he did, she would be unable to let him go. Now she is as much his as she is hers. At the end of the book, Branch and the little dragon find themselves in a world where humans and dragons walk the same earth. They spend the night together, at which time he tells her the name of the dragon he was before he was 'Branch' (another plot point): Vincent Fenwick. The name suggests that Branch was meant to be a 'hero' - a creature that could truly see the good in people. Branch was in fact a vampire, who was cursed by a witch, and then lived for three years with her as a vampire. Vincent Fenwick was a mortal, who betrayed his vampire wife and child, and was sent to a world where vampires and werewolves live together, hoping to be killed by the brother of the woman he betrayed.
