PK Hindi Movie Directory: A Popular Book For Children And Teenagers READ PK Hindi Movie Directory: A Popular Book For Children And Teenagers Hello! My name is Nihat Adem. I'm a publisher with Ananda Publishers. I'm going to show you the Kannada version of a book called the Hindi Movie Directory. Please accept my apology for its English name, but I wanted to get it out there as early as possible. I do this for two reasons. The first reason is that Hindi movies have been long criticized for the rampant misogyny and the distorting of Indian culture that occurs in them, especially in the many Bollywood movies. With Kannada, Telugu and Tamil movie releases crossing borders and the arrival of more movies that transcend regional boundaries, this is the right time to show these titles to our kids. Please do take note, that this is a technical book intended only for high school children or above. The demographic it is aimed at is that of an Indian teenager, though I would not say it's targeted at just one kind of Indian teenager. It covers a wide range of issues that affect young people today – everything from love, life, relationships, mental health, sexuality, consent, cultural issues, the need for education, the issue of sexism, race and religion to nationalism, nationalism and nationalism. I want to see our kids armed with tools with which they can develop an open, critical and caring relationship with the world around them. It is absolutely crucial that they start doing this now. This is the same book as the one I translated in 2016. It was the first book I published. It is not a commercial book but a free one. It covers, in detail, over 1,600 movies from the 1950s onwards, and contains questions that the reader can find at the back of the book and use to answer. The main reason I was motivated to write this book was a realization that as an Indian living in the west, many of us keep going to India to get educated, but this education is seldom of the educational kind. While people who come to India do not usually go to big universities, they still learn a lot. Many of them go on to become teachers, some go to medical schools and some even go to the best universities in the world. We don't ask them to go to Harvard or Stanford, or even a good university like the IITs. But that's because most of us think they already know about our culture, about the world, about everything. But most of them are just beginning to learn – and India has given them such a treasure of entertainment that we do not have the right to leave them to ignorant, crude films. I wanted to make a book that included all that information. The Hindi Movie Directory, though it is now written for older teenagers and adults, is very much the book that I wish my parents had when I was growing up, one that included all the information that they needed to form a critical and reasoned opinion about India's movies. The first section starts off by summarizing India's social history up to the last few decades, beginning with the life of the Buddha and moving on through the various phases of Indian civilization, Hindu, Muslim and British rule. It then lists the important movies that came out in a given year in that time period. This is followed by the subcontinent's cultural history and the biographies of all of India's most influential personalities. This section includes key questions that all Indian viewers should be able to answer, about the release date of a film and what cultural impact it had on the movie's audience, how much the movie cost, what types of actors were popular at that time, who was in the cast, who was directing, who was working on the sets. Then it brings to light important topics in the subcontinent's cinema such as nudity, obscenity, the portrayal of women, the depiction of the caste system and Hinduism, the depiction of interracial relationships, homosexuality, racism, the role of religion in the movies, the media, the effect of the economic crisis in India on the movies, and the influence of cinema on the history of the country and on society in general
